At a Glance
- Fairview’s earliest settlers, led by Civil War veteran Adam Cooper, once called the area Cane Creek. The land was once home to the Cherokee Native Americans who were expelled from the area by General Griffith Rutherford. Most settlers shared a Quaker heritage; however, their kin mostly became either Methodists or Baptists.
- Fairview has strong agricultural roots. As time went by, however, the town’s growth became oriented with that of Asheville, Buncombe County’s county seat. The local food movement is still well and alive, as Fairview’s Hickory Nut Gap Farm can attest. The farm was established in the early 1900s. Aside from its produce, Hickory Nut is also well known for hosting several family-oriented activities all year round.
- The Florence Nature Preserve in Gerton is just a short drive from Fairview. Owned by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy (CMLC), the nature preserve spans 600 acres. It can only be accessed by a scenic trailhead situated just off Highway 74A.
